From: John Kumm, gardening enthusiast
|

|
Hello, I'm a fellow gardening enthusiast who has discovered what
I firmly believe is the most effective way to improve the land surrounding my house.
I would like to tell you a little about my story, and why I want
to share my knowledge with you.

My daughter and her husband decided that their back garden was
somewhat drab, and that they needed to do something to really make it special and a talking point among their
friends and neighbours.
For quite some time, they weren't exactly sure what they were
looking for. While they considered the idea of water features, for some reason they weren't particularly
enthusiastic about the sorts of pictures and examples they found in books, magazines and ravelling around looking
at display gardens, etc.
I bet you'll guess what happened next ...
One day they decided to visit
a outdoor garden show that had been set up to showcase some of the new ideas, skills and talents
available. As they were on their way out they suddenly saw a water feature that simply stunned them with its
simplicity and appeal.
Rather than the simple pond, rockpool or fountain, they had
discovered a feature that included a natural stream that trickled across the garden from one pool to the
another.
So what did they do then?
They immediately identified the landscaping contractor and asked
for a visit and quotation for such a stream in their own garden. After a little negotiation, the work began and
they soon had their own native stream, which they populated with native
fish.
Alas, their knowledge of water garden features was not
sufficient for them to properly specify exactly what they really needed. After a few months, they
discovered that the pump capacity was inadequate, the filtering didn't match the water flow, and the stream simply
ceased to flow.
Now get this ..
As a result, the fish
all died, the whole system clogged up with green algae, and much re-designing of the feature (with
subsequent ripping up of the surrounding earthworks) was required.
So what to do now?
Whilst this was heartbreaking for both of them, it did show them
that they needed to know a lot more about how water gardens worked in
the environment, and how to make the water garden self regulating.
They asked me to help them work out how to do this, and between
us, we managed to re-create the stream with the look and feel that they loved so much, combined with a
self-sustaining ecological system.
The system now sustains itself, and seems to be a natural part
of the surrounding environment.
They learned that there is a lot more to keeping a successful
watergarden working effectively than just letting it look after itself.
It then occurred to me that there wasn't a lot of information
out there for people who like my daughter were wishing to design, set up and establish a really magnificent
watergarden. There was a real need in the marketplace for a manual that would provide the sort of information and
resources that people need when they get into this style of gardening.

Once I had made the decision to bring together a manual with all
of the bits of information that people needed to successfully create their own water garden, I needed to pull all
of this information together.
If I'd realised how big the task of gathering the material was,
I may have throught twice about the idea of writing a book in the first place. I must say that I'm a bit of a
terrier really, and once I'd locked my teeth into the task, I just didn't want to let go.
Back to the
almost bottomless pit of scattered online information. Can you relate to these issues?
-
How can I make sure that my water feature will work
for me?
-
How can I make sure that my water feature won't cause
other problems?
-
What style of water feature is going to work best in
my garden?
-
Will my water feature be tremendously wasteful of
water?
-
How hard is it for me to have fish in my water
garden?
-
How can I landscape the water feature so that it looks
like a natural part of the garden?
-
Can I have a water garden without the costs blowing
out?
-
Will I be able to have time to relax and enjoy my water
garden?

These are some of the issues that I needed to find the
answers to when I wrote the book:
|

|
How would you feel if having decided to include a water feature for your garden, then
you have it built only to find out that it simply doesn't work properly. Imagine the devastation! You
must ensure that all elements of the design are matched, that the water doesn't run away, and that the
rest of your garden won't suffer. |
|

|
I've known of gardeners who've installed water features, only to
discover that the result has been that excess water has caused problems to other plants surrounding
the feature – another disaster.
|
|

|
How can you prevent my new water garden from actually distracting from
the rest of my garden, rather than enhancing it? I want to impress my neighbours, not have them
sniggering at me!
|
|

|
If water usage is a problem in your area, then you need to make sure
that the water features you bring in to your garden aren't going to be “red carded” by the local
authorities who tell you that it can't be used.
|
|

|
We don't want all our fish to die in our water feature by failing to
treat fill water properly, letting the temperature vary too greatly or failing to maintain an
ecological balance.
|
|

|
Every garden is different, so that every water feature must be
carefully designed and planned so that it fits naturally into the environment, and doesn't result
in major distractions to the surrounding parts of the garden.
|
|

|
We're not all blessed with limitless funds for our garden, so what do
we need to know in order to ensure that we can design a water feature plan that will work within
our own budget?
|
|

|
Unless you are able to use the water feature as a means of relaxation
and de-stressing in your garden, then it may be that something hasn't worked as well as you had
hoped. Let's hope that you're not distracted by traffic noise, not able to see the sun, in a windy
spot or being covered with spray from the waterfall.
|
The good news for my daughter's family is that after a little
re-design and a much clearer understanding of what is necessary to keep all of the elements of their natural stream
in equilibrium, then the system now does exactly what it was designed to do – native fish and frogs are breeding,
water birds have been attracted into the garden and the back garden now looks just like a natural wetland micro
environment.
That was the impetus for me to put this manual together. I
realised that there would be many other gardeners out there who would be in a similar situation, and who would like
to find out more about the design, planning and building of water features using a resource that combines all of
the needed information in one place, without too much fluff or hype.
So, after about 6 months of research, speaking to experts and
discussing many ideas with other gardeners, I've done it!

a comprehensive eBook that gives you all that you need to
know to become an expert on water features in your own garden.

And hey, don't take my word for it on how great this package is. Listen to what people just
like you have to say about it:
|
“I had no idea what I wanted from a water
feature, or how to go about designing it, until I started reading your book. “The Ultimate Water
Garden Design Manual” is truly inspirational, with so many ideas, options and techniques. Your book
has helped me decide the type of water feature I want, where to locate it, how to design it and a
step-by-step process of how to create my natural water feature; including how to make it look
natural and develop the micro-environment. Thank you for writing such a comprehensive
book.”

Hi John,
It was with great interest that I read
through your well presented book on Water Gardens. I have been a keen gardener all of my life and
never felt qualified to take on the water garden bit. Your explanations are visionary and so simply
set out, that now i certainly feel that I could easily master the process with enjoyment. I have
little knowledge of the right water plants to use and you went into that with great
details.
The climate effects when constructing a
pond was a factor I not been aware of and the history behind the various garden layouts took me
down memory lane as I had visited many of those areas you touched on overseas.
Well done and I look to reading your Book 2
when completed.
Kind Regards

Thank you for the opportunity to learn so much about water
gardens, and how to set them up for my customers.
I have been running a business that has
developed from simple mowing and garden tidying into design and layouts. One of my customers asked
me about whether or not I could help her set up a small pond and fountain, but at the time I hadn’t
any idea where to start.
I looked on the internet for some help, and
found your great book. With the help of the information in the book, I was able to build something
that the customer has been so happy about, she has told many others.
I can’t thank you enough for the
opportunity to expand my business.
